Not happy with what I get for the price. Especially after having the same insurance on my past and present residence and not needing to use them - yet premium increased.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I have had North Star Insurance for more than 25 years - on both my previous home and the one I am currently residing in. I had a water leak in my basement shortly after I purchased my current house (back in 2010).

I contacted North Star Insurance regarding the damp carpet and flooring - just to see what, if anything, I would need to do. I told them not to send anyone over to look at it just yet because my son was going to take a look at it first. We ended up pulling up the carpet, bleaching the floor underneath, and replacing the pad ourselves. No agent from North Star ever came over to my house (because I had asked them not to) or even gave me a phone call to see what we decided to do.

A short time later a received a letter in the mail saying that my insurance premium had gone up "due to a claim" filed. I contacted them by phone and their response was that even if they were called, but didn't actually have to do anything, they considered that a "claim" and increased my premium!!!! Absolutely crazy!!!

In over 25 years I have never had to use my home insurance for anything, yet, because of that one phone call, my premiums went up! Personally, I would not recommend them to anyone!

I had a similar situation. I had called insurance agent Farmers to see if I was covered for fire.

the car at burned up on freeway and I knew I had dropped full coverage, but thought maybe this a different situation. All was well there but i retired and moved to Minnesota and was going to go with American Family.

They insured my house at closing and then informed me they could not insure my cars because I had called and ask if I had insurance. No claim was ever filed.

Crime Insurance

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I knew condo association board members could be high risk, but I never heard of Crime insurance before.

I can see fiduciary liability coverage.

But selling the following to board members who boast about not following the governing documents, refusing owners-members copies of documents they are entitled.

Selling some of this coverage should be a crime in itself, I wonder if there is bank robber, diamond theft, drug dealer, murder coverage?

All sold to small condo assn. who is broke in part due to 1 or 2 VOLUNTEER assn.

board, who has their own election process. The board Pres. turned it into a family ran business. He hired himself, his wife, his daughter, son in law and friend and paid them as well..Several thousand over the expected yearly budget.

Directors and Liability coverage

Businessowners coverage

Hired Auto For Who Board members running a errand> Board members aren't supposed to be compensated.

How does anyone know if running a errand or not..Sign on line when they leave and when they return?

Employment Related Practices policy

Non disclosure of records policy

Business Protection Plus

Insurance went from $6500 to over $14,000 in 3 years and NO claims.

If board members were honest and not trying to self manage with no business or facility management experience. Self managing is costing much more in this case..

So who pays for all of that, other owners who have the same invested interest as the volunteer retired board member.

I started using North Star as a referral from my daughter when I moved to this area. She & her husband had substantial loss to their home & belongings due to smoke damage.

They had acquired a "Full Replacement" policy and had great results with all aspects of their claim. I've had a minor vehicle accident that I was responsible for. The other party was paid without a blink. (I only carried liability because my car had very low value-I didn't expect to receive anything and didn't-which was as it should be.) On two different cars that I have owned and carried full coverage with a deductible, I have had windshield breaks and both were covered-also without a blink.

The deductible doesn't apply to windshield claims with full coverage so it didn't cost me anything either time. I haven't had any problems and would recommend them to others.

I had a theft in my shop There was around 850 dollars vandalizum to the doors and other areas. I was lucky enough to recover the lions share of my tools but still had around 900 dollars of lose in tools and equipment.

The adjuster never once questioned my losses and the amount of each item. I tried to be as honest in the losses as I could remember and they treated me very fairly.

I find in life if your fair in your dealings most people will treat one the same. Am very happy with the company and will sell them to my friend and family .

WJ Typically I agreed with your statement "I find in life if your (you're) fair in your dealings most people will treat one the same." However, given our society today and the number of complaints that are listed on sites such as this, it seems to be quite clear that the idea is falling by the wayside. There clearly are still people and companies that are honest and run on integrity and "Golden Rule" morality.

That being said, I do believe that we have a responsibility to protect ourselves as much as possible. A handshake in the past was generally as good as a signature (but even 100 years ago there were slick talking shysters). There is a well known talk show host of many years now that wrote a book a few years back called "Life Codes." I don't see the author as a negative person and yet he chose to write this book to advise people that things have changed. A brief summary of the book says, "abandons traditional thinking and tells you the ugly truth about the users, abusers, and overall "bad guys" we all have in our lives." No, this isn't intended to be a plug for the book, I'm not connected in any way.

I've just seen so much negative that other people have frequently experienced that I no longer believe that your statement is the norm but more so the exception. I encourage everyone to cover their backside. Clearly you and I and others have been fortunate with North Star. Others, equally clearly have not been so lucky.

When I come across these apparent inequities I consider it somewhat and usually find two answers to address the issue, and I'm sure that there are many more. One is that the customer has unrealistic expectations and the second is that the given representative is poor at their job or is just one of those people who believe they're doing their company a favor by "saving them some money" and doesn't care about the customer. Anyway, I could write on for a long time regarding other possibilities, but will end here and just suggest to everyone that you watch your own backside and if you feel that you have been wronged, then take that person or company to task. I don't know where the original quote came from but Robert F.

Kennedy and many others have used it, "Don't get mad, get even." If you sit back and do nothing, you can expect to get nothing. There are many options to file complaints and just telling a company after you have made known to them that you are not satisfied (should be your FIRST step), if you have gotten no where, you should also tell them that your next two phone calls are going to be to the State Attorney General's Office and the BBB.

There are also commissions and other offices (sometimes State or even Federal) for large regulated companies that can assist one with your complaint and apply pressure on the given company or individual. Good luck to any and all.

Do not use this company they will not pay you the value of you vehicle when it is damaged. I hit a deer and totalled out my vehicle my vehicle is worth $7,175 amd they only wanted to pay me $4,600 for my vehicle. Well that doesnt even pay any of the loan off on the vehicle. This is retarded. They should pay the value of the vehicle. Then almost two weeks later they still have not semt check to my bank.....

Amber: As an insurance agent, I can tell you that, with respect to damages to a vehicle, ANY company only owes for the amount of the repair, or the value of the vehicle, if it is a total loss. I suspect that the damages from the deer hit were less than the value of the car, and as such, that is all that is owed by the company. ANY COMPANY, for that matter

Guest

Perhaps if you could coherently explain yourself it would help. Lots of misspellings in your statement and then some name calling.

Very mature. Are you an actual adult?

Just because you owe a certain amount on your loan that doesn't mean your vehicle is worth that amount.

That's just what some company/bank agreed to finance you for. Perhaps next time you should buy something you can afford and you wouldn't be in this situation.

Sounds like you should take some personal responsibility and stop blaming your insurance company.

Amber Nelson-Who are you?

Since when did a person have to have a degree in communications, be an excellent typist or grammatically correct to have a complaint or express an opinion?

Name calling?

What is this? "Very mature. Are you an actual adult?"

You're right that the worth of a vehicle is not determined by how much you owe-but they could be one and the same. Do you have inside information regarding this person?

If you don't several of your comments are nothing more than assumptions and judgements.

"Perhaps next time you should buy something you can afford and you wouldn't be in this situation." Do you know what he can afford? He could possibly afford a car at twice or more of the value of his vehicle.

"Sounds like you should take some personal responsibility and stop blaming your insurance company." Where do you get this from? The person said the car is "is worth $7,175." Do you know that it's not? Per the writer, there was low ball payout.

Maybe there was. You don't know and it's something that has certainly happened before-maybe not with North Star-I don't know- but there's no doubt that IT HAS HAPPENED. As I started out with: "Who are you?" and along with that: Who put you in the judgement seat? I don't know the person filing the complaint and I don't know you but from everything I can see on the page, you don't have anything to do with this and personally neither do I, but you owe this person an apology.

"How can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, while there is still a beam in your own eye?

You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brothers eye." NIV Matt: 7: 4&5

DO NOT BUY A POLICY FROM NORTH STAR MUTUAL!

What a lousy company!! I had my 3 new autos and house insured together...built new in 2002. Only 15 days later received a cancellation notice from the company indicating the reason: Former Farm Site. Huh?? Yep, they're right, I tore down the old house on a old 5 acre plot and built a BRAND NEW 2500 sq. ft. 2 story brick house...new framing, new full poured basement...new framing...new 200 amp service..new septic system....new geothermal....new 200' well. All uninsurable according to this company. Obviously they are not financially stable enough to absorb such a loss if a major disaster were to occur. If such a disaster would occur, according to the other reviews, I would have had a terrible fight in the event of a claim. Imagine the poor policy holders who had to experience that! STAY FAR FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!! I will be cancelling my auto insurance in the morning also.. no need to give them any more money than they deserve.

I'm getting ready to drop Northstar because they don't cover what you need them to. I had my car fixed at the dealership and the strut they repaired broke.

The dealership fixed it, but now it has residual damage to the frame, sensors, et cetera. I would NEVER recommend them

I had photos showing trees were neglected, north star would rather deny claim and hire not one but 2 attorneys than pay to fix my car. I leave you as judge , Do these trees look neglected.

They say I should not have parked there even though insured told me that is where I have to park. Agent that wrote policy said that they were neglected and that they lied about it. No one wants to help me fix my car. You can email me for more detailed photos.

These trees had fungus on them, and splitting limbs. North Star thought they were fine and did feel like they needed to pay claim.

If you have comprehensive coverage try going through your own insurance company and let them go after the other party. If that isn't an option then plan B is to sue the other party in small claims court for the repair costs to the car (get some estimates at least), rental fees during repair and any direct expenses resulting from this event.

Keep in mind you can't sue for punitive damages or what you THINK the car is worth. If you win the judge will award you out-of-pocket damages.

Pictures of the car, the tree and parking lot as well as any copies of correspondence between you and the other party would be helpful. Also, anything you say should be backed up in writing such as a certified letter to the other party demanding specific compensation for damages, otherwise they could say in court that you told them that you tripped and this is the first time that they heard about this car/tree business.

The adjuster low balls an estimate knowing I cant get other estimates

FIRST OF ALL IF YOUR THINKING ABOUT USING THIS COMPANY DONT. We had a burst wayer pipe under the toilet I got an estimate they said it was $14000 damage the adjuster said it was only $5500 in damages. Denying the claim I have no recorse but to sue. AND its been over a year since my claim. Why have insurance at all? If its just going to be a fight every time you have a claim. Im also going to drop this company. This company is not any cheaper in the long run I would have been better off with a different company.

North Star is horrible. Had tornado, low balled me, after 3 months still battling out..

they are insane. They hire their own adjusters, contractors, and lawyers, and do not want to claim.

Guest

North Star are crooks and will try and low ball you on your claim. Very unethical company.

Guest

From your description, the insurance company, did not deny your claim. They paid the claim.

There is a disagreement with the cost of repairs. The insurance company owes you the reasonable value for the cost of repairs.

Just because your estimate is $14,000 does not mean that actually is reasonable. Insurance contracts have a method to resolve these type of issues, this is called appraisal.

Guest

North Star uses Power Claim as its property damage adjusting software when the rest of the world uses Xactimate. Power Claims pricing is far below the industries standard and was chosen by North Star so they could low ball there customers and contractors doing the repairs.

I have been in this industry for 15 years and I would stay away from North Star.

I spoke with a desk adjuster who immediately became defensive when questioned about there pricing, They claim there pricing is decided by meeting with contractors in the area. And who the *** has the time or wants to go to Appraisal because North Star is too tight to pay what they rightfully owe.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE IF YOU HAVE NORTH STAR MUTUAL

After a storm went through our neigborhood, we had several roofing, siding, window etc. companies coming through our neighborhood. After meeting with 3, 2 of them would not even work with us due to the fact that we had North Star Mutual. One of the companies told us, no matter how this claim turns out, GET A NEW INSURANCE COMPANY. In short, they said our claim, which came from the only company who was willing to try, was impartial with their estimates and they have now thrown all MN Statutes towards us and by law do not have to pay 1 penny on the claim. IF YOU HAVE NORTHSTAR MUTUAL, PLEASE DO YOUR FAMILY A FAVOR AND FIND A NEW ONE. THEY NEVER PAY ON CLAIMS. ALL OUR NEIGHBORS HAD NEW ROOFS, SIDING AND WINDOWS. BUT NOT US.....THANKS NORTHSTAR MUTUAL. THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE SHOULD BE INVESTIGATING THIS HORRIBLE COMPANY.. MAYBE WILL FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL. BUT OUR ADIVSE TO YOU OUR FRIENDS IS......GET A REPUTABLE INSURANCE COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!NORTHSTAR MUTUAL IS A SCAM............WHEN YOU HAVE CONTRACTORS WHO TELL YOU TO RUN FROM THEM, HEED THEIR ADVISE........ITS TRUE!
